5 Questions to Ask Before you Hire!

General Tips on Hiring a Plumber or AC guy.

Below are specific questions and answers but first it’s best to learn some general tips and suggestions for choosing the ‘right’ Company for you for you. This is a significant decision that can bring you joy or heartache. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing a plumber.

  • Consider only licensed companies, especially since Arizona requires licensing, as most US states do.
  • Evaluate only companies who can deliver proof of insurance. ( call ahead the may be reluctant at first be be upfront and tell them why you are asking.
  • Ask the company how long has he/she been in the plumbing and Air Conditioning industry. The more experience the company has, the better. I would say a minimum of 8 year.
  • Ask it they have a service charge. Most companies do and the waive it of you do the repair the same day. A normal charge theses days is between $150 and $175 dollars.
  • Ask about the WARRANTY. should be the Arizona minimum 2 years  workmanship labor 1 year parts.
  • Go on line and check out the reviews. See what people are saying about them.
  • Check BBB. This is a great place to see what a company is made of. Below is the link.  https://www.bbb.org/us/az/tempe/profile/air-conditioning-contractor/service-pros-plumbing-heating-and-cooling-inc-1126-1000011092

Now that you know the general tips, here are five critical questions you should ask every Company before hiring them:

1. What Is the Estimated Total Cost of Fixing Your Problem?

Homeowners should be careful, if not skeptical, about quotes you receive over the phone. Good Service Companies typically want to see and analyze your problem, before giving you an estimate of the total cost of the repairs. Companies that give prices on the phone may seem like they are be honest, but statistics show theses are the switch and bate tactics that get home owners all the time. They give you low and impressive pricing over the phone only to get the Technician in the door to sale you all kinds of repairs you don't need.  No Dispatched can diagnose your issue over the phone stay away from theses types of companies.

2. Ask Who Will Be Doing the Work?

In today world many companies hire subcontractors to do the actual work. The problem with this is the Technician is not an employee of the company you hire, so your recourse in the event you have an issue is zero. You only want to hire companies who will send out an employee in a marked truck and a uniform to do work at your house.  This way if you have an issue you are able to protect yourself.

3. Are they electronically dispatched?

You might think why would this be important in hiring a Air Conditioning or Pluming Company? Its simple a company who is electronic, meaning the technician does all his work on an i pad or mobile device, has invested a great deal of time and money on the technician that will be sent to your home. It is unlikely you will get a guy who was just hired or starting out as this type of training takes months to complete.  He will also have at his finger tips the ability to check to see if your items are under factory warranty, and all the technical data needed to make a fast and cost effective repair. Mostly, he will present to you a clear and honest estimate on this device that you can clearly see and have e-mailed to you.  In most cases companies that are electronic set the prices in a price book on the tablet so you wont have to worry about him or her gouging you with the price. It cost a great deal of money to be electronic, so this will usually indicate a company that is solid and will be around should you have a warranty issue on your repair.

4. How do you charge for repairs?

Seams like an odd question but it's important for you to know how the repair will be calculated. Very few companies charge by the hour theses day, but you need to ask do they charge drive time, do they round up to the next hour and do they have a minimum? The problem with hourly companies although you may think you will save money. the reality is they are slow, and typically always late when arriving to your home. No one is in a rush to do anything when its on your dime.  It's best to hire a company that charges by the task, no drive time, no stand by time, just simply for the task the repair. Theses types of Technicians get paid a % of the ticket plus a bonus if you give them a 5 star and the don't get paid to come back should you have a recall. That being said they are fast, on time, clean professional and do a good job so they don't have to come back.

5. What does your gut tell you?

Look, don't just look at the bottom line when it comes to repairs. Ask yourself, Is this company i just called easy to get a hold off?, was the CSR who answered the phone friendly and knowledgeable? Do they have insurance , licence, good reviews , good BBB ratting, do you have a good feeling about them? If not get someone else. It's not 100% about the cost, what if you have a warranty on the call? What if you need them to return? will they work with youi and address the issue with professionalism or make it a nightmare?
